CHAMULA

Chamula was born from a moment of deep inspiration that struck Yuki Matsuda during his first visit to the village of Chamula in Chiapas, Mexico, in 1995.

At the time, Chamula remained largely untouched by outside influence. Spanish wasn’t widely spoken, and the village was home to indigenous communities who preserved their own language, traditions, and spiritual practices.
Yuki encountered a world where everyday life was shaped by the hands of its people—donkeys pulling carts, shepherds in the fields, women weaving at wooden looms, others embroidering cloth by hand—a lifestyle grounded in time, labor, and meaning.

What moved him most was the village church: its white walls, turquoise window frames, and vibrant paper flags in pink, yellow, and white fluttering in the breeze.
Inside, a powerful spiritual space unfolded—a blend of Christian iconography and indigenous ritual unlike anything he had ever seen.
This experience became the origin of the brand.

Today, Chamula works directly with indigenous artisans to create handwoven wool sweaters, hand-embroidered textiles, leather-woven huaraches, and traditional Ranchero shoes—all made using techniques passed down through generations.
These are crafts that can only be created by the people of that land, using their hands, knowledge, and lived culture.

Yuki continues to return to the highland villages, working alongside local makers, ensuring that these time-honored techniques are preserved and respected.
Chamula is a brand rooted in that first moment of awe—committed to sharing the quiet power of handmade traditions, with care, humility, and deep respect.
